The making of the Masthattan: we’ve been playing around with bitters made from the chocolate our neighbors make for a while. This is a spin on a classic manhattan, made with bourbon, vermouth, and home-made Mast Brothers Chocolate bitters.

Every cocktail menu should have at least one drink with an impenetrable name. Ours is the Blue and Gold Buck. Blue and Gold are the official colors of Brooklyn (Jay-Z’s Nets uniforms notwithstanding). Cocktails made with ginger are called bucks. So, a strong cocktail made in Brooklyn with strong ginger ale becomes The Blue & Gold Buck. 

It’s vodka, lemon juice, double-strength simple syrup, house peach bitters, and Blenheim’s ginger ale. It’s spicy, juicy, and refreshing, whatever you call it.

It’s New England Corn Whiskey, blackstrap rum, house-made pumpkin syrup & autumn-spiced bitters, and egg white, all shook up and garnished with shavings of nutmeg.

We’re big fans of shrubs, an old method of preserving fruit with vinegar and sugar. They make excellent accents in cocktails, and so when we were looking for a way to hang on to the summer’s blueberries as long as possible, making a shrub of them seemed like the smart way to go.

We add Spirit of the Hudson vodka from Tuthilltown Spirits in Gardiner, New York, a splash of soda, and Hopped Grapefruit bitters from Bittermens

We wrapped the whole thing in the wreath of a Fleetwood Mac song.

The Blue Letter: Spirit of the Hudson vodka, blueberry shrub, Bittermens hopped grapefruit bitters, soda, pickled blueberry.

When you have the good fate to work next door to the country’s best chocolate makers, you don’t let any opportunity to get your hands on their beans get past you.

We wanted to use their chocolate in a drink, and thought making bitters would be the best way to go about it. Here’s the process by which we did it.
